Chinook Trail Program - January 24th,2012

Chinook Trail Program in Laconia, NH

Did you know that a rare and famous dogbreed, the Chinook, was
established right here in northern New England? Did you further know
that the Chinook is the official New Hampshire State Dog?
Historian and dog lover, Bob Cottrell will explain who these dogs are
and why are they famous. They are called Chinooks after the original
Great Chinook, the first of his breed. While they were originally
developed as sled dogs, they make great pets and are wonderful around
children.
Chinooks are one of only a few breeds created in America. They were
established in the early 20th century and their blood line can be
traced to a single individual. There are only about 800 Chinooks
living today.
The Chinook breed was developed by a rough and ready adventurer named
Arthur Walden. After spending time as a “dog puncher” in the Alaskan
Yukon during the Gold Rush days, Walden returned to Wonalancet, a
small village in Tamworth, New Hampshire. His goal was to create a new
sled dog breed with power, endurance, speed and a friendly nature.
In 2010, Bob’s son Ryan was awarded a grant for a New Hampshire apprenticeship
Traditional Arts Apprenticeship Grant awarded by the New Hampshire
State Council on the Arts, a state agency. Traditional Arts
Apprenticeship grants help to preserve our living heritage for future
generations by providing support for a master traditional artist to
teach an experienced apprentice in one-to-one sessions. Funding for
Traditional Arts Apprenticeship grants is made possible through
appropriations from the New Hampshire State Legislature and the
National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency.
Options for this program include the following
Visit with Tug (Mountain Laurel Tamworth Tugger)
Tug  as ambassador of official state dog
Program also includes display of hand made dog sled and associated
harnesses, lines and hooks. Bring your camera to get pictures with
Tug, the sled and the harnesses.

Winter Carnival 2012 - Feb 11,2012

Seventeenth Annual Chinook Winter Carnival
Chinooks New England will be returning to the Remick Museum and Farm Winter Carnival on February, 11, 2012. Winter Carnival is an annual event with ice harvesting demonstrations, horse drawn sleigh rides, snow show contests for the kids, and sled dog rides. Outside the Chinooks will be giving sled dog rides to the kids, weather permitting. Inside the museum there will be a sled dog display where Ruth Lind and Rastro will be at the display handing out Chinook information, and informing the public about the breed. In addition to the events hosted by the Remick Museum there will be additional CNE events throughout the weekend.
Planned Itinerary
Friday afternoon/evening, February 10, 2012
For those arriving on Friday we generally meet in Samantha’s restaurant/pub for a meet & greet and to have dinner together. All are invited to this informal meeting.
Saturday, February 11, 2012
Winter Carnival runs from 10:00AM  to about 3:00PM. The Chinook sled rides have been from 10:00AM to about 1:00PM or whenever the dogs get tired. Again, this is weather permitting.
We are looking for volunteers to help with the sledding rings. You do not have to be an expert to help the kids into and out of the sleds, line up the kids, or be a safety lookout. Please consider volunteering for some or all of the sledding time.
Saturday Evening CNE will conduct it’s annual meeting at dinner. Please join us for dinner and the meeting even if you are coming for the day. You do not have to stay at Samantha’s to attend the dinner.
Sunday, February 12, 2012
After a long day of activities on Saturday we look forward to a leisurely breakfast at Samantha’s then head to Hemenway State Forest for some recreational sledding on the trails. This is a good area to just have some fun with your dogs. There are groomed trails, for sledding, skijoring, and hiking. Hemenway is not far from the Remick Museum.
